Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a disease in which cancer cells are found in the tissues under the skin or mucous membrane, producing characteristic, flat or raised purple lesions. KS consists of nodular, infiltrating, and lymphatic lesions. KS usually occurs as a disease that accompanies AIDS. This cancer commonly affects the skin or mucous membranes lining the mouth, nose and anus, and also spreads to other organs of the body such as lungs, liver and the intestinal tract.
The Ayurvedic treatment of KS is aimed at treating the organ or system affected and boosting the immune status of the body. Medicines like Mahamanjishthadi-Qadha, Saarivadi-Churna, Arogya-Vardhini, Gandhak-Rasayan, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu, Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Bahava (Cassia fistula), Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), Nimba (Azadirachta indica), Haridra (Curcuma longa), Daruharidra (Berberis aristata), Takla (Clerodendron phomodis), Karanj (Pongamia pinnata), Khadeer (Acacia catechu) and Bhrungraj (Eclipta alba) are used to treat lesions affecting the skin and mucous membranes. Skin lesions can also be treated using local applications of ointments containing Manjishtha, Saariva, Haridra, Chandan (Santalum album) and Mandukparni (Centella asiatica).
Lesions involving the lungs can be treated using medicines like Maha-Manjishthadi-Qadha, Kanchnaar-Guggulu, Ras-Sindur, Malla-Sindur, Sameer-Pannag-Ras, Suvarna-Sameer-Pannag-Ras, Shrung-Bhasma, Abhrak-Bhasma, Pushkarmool (Inula racemosa), Kantakari (Solanum xanthocarpum), Kushtha (Saussurea lappa), Vasa (Adhatoda vasaka) and Yashtimadhuk (Glycerrhiza glabra). Lesions affecting the liver can be treated using medicines like Arogya-Vardhini, Bhunimbadi-Qadha, Punarnavadi-Qadha, Sutshekhar-Ras, Suvarna-Sutshekhar-Ras, Shankh-Vati, Kutki (Picrorrhiza kurroa), Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa), Kalmegh (Andrographis paniculata), Devdangri (Luffa echinata) and Bhumiamalaki (Phyllanthus niruri). Lesions affecting the intestinal tract can be treated using medicines like Praval-Panchamrut-Ras, Triphala (Three fruits), Trikatu (Three pungent herbs), Kutaj-Parpati, Panchamrut-Parpati and Suvarna-Parpati.
The weakened immune system of the body can be treated using medicines like Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Tulsi, Bhrungraj, Yashtimadhuk, Bala (Sida cordifolia), Naagbala (Grewia hirsuta), Suvarna-Malini-Vasant, Suvarna-Bhasma, Trivang-Bhasma and Heerak-Bhasma.
Ayurvedic medicines can be given in combination with modern treatment like chemotherapy and radiation therapy to improve the therapeutic effect, reduce side effects of modern treatment and to improve overall survival. People affected with KS can usually survive for several decades with appropriate treatment.
